Best Fish Head Curry

In Kuala Lumpur, there’s so many Mamak Shops that sells Fish Head Curry, often claiming to be authentic, original etc… But being a cook myself, most of these claimants are merely products of commercial cooking, with no intrinsic value whatsoever.

The Fish Head Curry that I’m about to highlight has been in existence since 1996, selling the same quality products, at the same location, almost everyday in a year. Its none-other than the Anuar’s Fish Head Curry in Lucky Gardens Bangsar. Come to think of it, I can’t imagine why I did not write any reviews earlier as I’ve been a regular there since its opening. Back then, there was one particular helper of Anuar, can’t remeber his name.. A young chap that usually sings while serving customers. He would always proclaim that Siti Nurhaliza (now Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza) is his girlfriend!!

Anyways, its safe to say that not all of his dishes in his stall are superb, but with the right combination, it’ll definitely take you to heaven… for at least 2-3 days (with the curry aroma stuck to your hands.. no matter how vigorous you wash them!!).

What I normally order, and seems to work for me, are these dishes..

1) Plain White Rice
2) Fish Head Curry with all the condiments (Lady Fingers, etc)
3) Deep Fried Cuttlefish (Sotong Goreng)
4) Braised Bean Sprouts (Taugeh basah)
5) Iced Rose Syrup Water

I’m sure most of you have tasted the Curry itself but let me just explain to you, this man (Anuar), he cooks it with utter passion. He even gave me a recipe for it once, but I’d rather come to his stall. He lives in Port Dickson, and commutes everyday to KL, except for the month of Ramadhan, where he would rent a room above TMC for a month.

The Curry spices used are thoroughly cooked and prepared in patience. He takes his time to prepare and cook them, ensuring that all aspects of the broth is in utter excellence. Now let’s talk about his Deep Fried Cuttlefish.. Its cuttlefish marinated in salt, pepper and sprinkles of fish curry powder, and deep fried upon requests. Its cooked almost 7/9 of the way, which makes it medium well. Resulting to that, you get juices coming out of it when you bite, that refreshes your brain while eating his curry with rice. Tag that with the crunchiness of his simple cooked bean sprouts, and you’re there… in Heaven..

Anuar’s Fish Head Curry is freshly cooked everyday, thus if you were to take it home, it would still taste the same, unlike many other Fish Head curries around. And to top it all up, there’s always Anuar’s personal touch in PR & Marketing, always smiling, greeting his customers as if they’ve known each other for ages. What could be more comforting than being truly welcomed and appreciated??
